The Dark & The Light
Like the legs of a race horse, the wings of a racing pigeon are vital to its performance. But each year nature tells a pigeon to change all its feathers and grow new wing flights.
The goal of any pigeon trainer is to make sure that this feather growth does not affect his bird's aerodynamic integrity. And the timing of the stressful molt is also a factor in each bird’s overall health and stamina. "The Dark & The Light" explains how some of the world's leading pigeon trainers are using the power of daylight to control their pigeon's molt and ensure their birds are in perfect feather during the summer racing season.
This film explains when and why pigeons molt and also visits top pigeon fanciers who use either the "Dark" system or the "Light" system with their pigeons. The film follows these fanciers step-by-step as they plan their season and adjust light levels to either stimulate or retard the molting process. Light management is one of the most significant natural developments in the 150–year history of pigeon racing. By carefully controlling daylight a trainer can now dramatically reduce the stress of molting on his team of pigeons, while ensuring each bird has a full wing exactly when they need it most. That is the moment when they leave the release crates at the start of their race to get home.

Young Wings
The power of pigeons to change people’s lives.
Jim’s highly acclaimed documentary shows the remarkable emotional and academic benefits domestic pigeons bring to modern society, and how they can solve the epidemic of what’s called “Nature Deficit Disorder. Filmed in the United States and Europe, no fancier who wants to explain or promote the positive power of pigeon keeping can be without this film.
In societies desperate to reconnect children with nature, award-winning filmmaker Jim Jenner documents how pigeons can influence a generation. Filmed in the USA and Europe, this film shows the ancient and profound power of mankind's oldest feathered friend.
Whether it's a school in the heart of Mississippi, the wilds of Montana, a youth prison in Europe or the gritty inner-city of South Central Los Angeles, Jenner shows how the “bird of peace” uniquely connects with today’s youth.
And he wonderfully articulates why a generation ago children did not suffer from what is now termed “Nature Deficit Disorder”.
It’s a story you will long remember. -
Schaerlaeckens
He's been called "The King of Orleans" for his three, first-place finishes in what was arguably the world's biggest pigeon race. But Ad Schaerlaeckens is more than Holland's greatest pigeon trainer. For decades he has been the hobby's leading writer, using his sharp mind to analyze how certain fanciers were winning. And using his sharp pen to call attention to the pigeon sport's bad ideas and buffoons.
His global fame as one of the sport's living legends has brought Ad more attention than he cares for. And, over the past decade he has retreated more and more from the spotlight. In part it's because he's a private person, but also because the volume of visiting fanciers and inquiries via phone and the internet had become simply overwhelming.
Knowing how much people want to hear his opinions led Ad Schaerlaeckens to agree to spend some time in front of a camera with a long-time friend, film maker Jim Jenner. Over a period of three days Schaerlaeckens answered the key questions pigeon fanciers constantly ask him about his methods. He also got to spend time describing his early years with pigeons and the factors that led to his unique view of the sport.
Honest, blunt and always a step ahead of the pack, this is Ad Schaerlaeckens. Over more than an hour and half he talks about his basic approaches to selecting pigeons, keeping them healthy and winning races. It's as close as you can come to sitting down with the man himself.

Secrets of Champions III - Young Bird Racing
Young Bird Racing
"THE CREAM OF THE CROP!" British Homing World - Dec. 2007
What does it take to be competitive in modern young bird racing? That's the subject Jim Jenner explores as he visits some of the world's best pigeon racers. Nothing in the sport has changed as much as the competition with birds in the year of their birth. By breeding earlier, and selecting for faster maturing birds, today's competitors are achieving performances that were unthinkable a few years ago. By using the forces of nature to retard the moult, and motivating older, stronger and more mature pigeons, today's "young birds" often outshine older competitors in many of Europe's biggest races. Traveling to Holland, Belgium, England and the United States this documentary explores the secrets of breeding the best young pigeons. The stages of weaning and training are explored as are the methods of "darkening". Chapters on health and motivation, as well as the impact of electronic timing on trapping are also included. Extra Special Features include tips on winter breeding and young bird feeding. It's an over three hour visit with some of the sharpest minds in the pigeon racing sport.

Best of British II
In the mid-80's Britain's Geoff Kirkland and Frank Tasker were the men to beat in long distance and middle distance old bird pigeon racing. Week after week their pigeons and methods had them at the top of the pigeon racing result sheet. What most pigeon fanciers didn’t realize was that Geoff Kirkland and Frank Tasker had been quietly perfecting methods they’d gleaned from the top widowhood fliers in Belgium and Holland. These secrets, combined with pigeons they were also bringing back from the continent, were helping them score countless wins against tough competition. Their management methods were relatively unknown until they helped create a film called "The Best of British". Released in the very early days of VHS home video, the film was an instant hit and opened the eyes of thousands of pigeon trainers, worldwide, to the widowhood system and it's benefits. Now, almost 25 years later, Geoff Kirkland and Frank Tasker are still feared competitors. But, true champions, they never rest on their laurels. Each season they’ve looked for new ways to improve their management of a top racing team. This new film is packed with point-by-point discussions of their methods of feeding and managing a widowhood team. It also takes you into new areas of pigeon management, especially on the subject of winning races with widowhood hens. Fantastic pigeon fanciers and old friends, Geoff Kirkland and Frank Tasker spend almost two hours covering their current thinking on pigeon management. They share a laugh or two about days together and the road they took to the top of the pigeon sport.
